$1.25 billion health boost to benefit communities like Mayo

Regional and rural communities like Mayo will be all that much healthier with the help of a $1.25 billion funding boost for health services and infrastructure announced late last year by the Australian Government.

Liberal candidate for Mayo Georgina Downer said the Community Health and Hospitals Program would support better patient care while reducing pressure on community and hospital services.

“This is a great outcome for communities like Mayo, where a rapidly growing population is increasing demand on local hospitals and health services,” Ms Downer said.

“This program will see our community, hospitals and health services work with the Government towards additional funding in key areas such as hospital infrastructure, specialist services like cancer treatment, disease management, drug and alcohol treatment, and mental health.

“The result will be more doctors, nurses and services in Mayo and South Australia.

“In my feedback from the local health sector, upgrades to the emergency department at the Mount Barker Hospital and expansion of acute care facilities at the South Coast District Hospital in Victor Harbor are an important priority and projects like these could benefit from the program.

“For some months I’ve been working at Federal and State levels with ministers Greg Hunt and Stephen Wade to ensure they understand the health needs of the growing Hills and Fleurieu communities.

“The volume of presentations at Mt Barker ED has increased sharply and the existing space is inadequate to meet current and future demand.  A new and enlarged emergency department will enable the hospital to cope with the increase in presentations through the next decade.

“There has been a sharp increase in presentations at the emergency department at South Coast District Hospital in the last four years. Expanding acute care facilities such as for renal dialysis will take some pressure off the hospital’s emergency department, enabling more timely transfer of patients requiring admission from ED and freeing up limited treatment spaces.

“I’m fighting for at least $8.55 million in Federal funding for the Mount Barker hospital and $8.41 million in Federal funding for the South Coast hospital in Victor Harbor.”
