The Liberal National Government has delivered a big boost to aged care in Mayo by approving a 75-bed facility in the Coorong Quays development on Hindmarsh Island.
Liberal candidate for Mayo Georgina Downer today welcomed the announcement, which addressed important concerns about a lack of aged care places in the region.
“Alexandrina Council has been highlighting a shortage of up to 100 aged care places in its area and this development will go some way to addressing this concern,” Ms Downer said.
“The Fleurieu Peninsula region is anticipated to experience increasing demand for aged care places and services in the future, so this announcement is very welcome.”
Ms Downer said the new facility, to be operated by Premier Health Care, will be located adjacent to the Alexandrina Cove Lifestyle Village.
“This facility will also benefit the local economy, generating about $15 million in building activity during the construction phase and creating 75 new jobs when it comes into operation,” she said.
“An additional $1 billion has been provided by the Liberal National Government for aged care every year since 2013. This is a record investment which will increase by more than $5.5 billion over the next four years.
“Australians are living longer, and the number of older Australians is rising in proportion to our population. This represents an important long-term challenge for our nation as we work to provide quality aged care.
“We must ensure we’re ready to meet demand which will only increase in the future. This means having a strong economy which provides the resources we need for quality aged care which meets the needs of older Australians and the expectations of the Australian community.”
