Equestrian centre to transform Oakbank

A proposed centre for South Australia’s equestrian sports could transform Oakbank and deliver real economic benefits for the Adelaide Hills.

Liberal candidate for Mayo Georgina Downer said she fully supported the proposal to a proposal by Equestrian South Australia to establish a State Equestrian Centre at Oakbank.

“Oakbank is ideally suited for the establishment of such a centre, which would involve the development of facilities which could transform the site and be utilised for a wide range of events and other purposes,” Ms Downer said.

“Australia has a proud record of excellence in equestrian sports. Our equestrians have successfully mined Olympic gold for generations. More than 33,000 South Australians take part in equestrian sports and participation is growing. It generates more than $100 million in economic activity for our State.

“Equestrian South Australia has put together a great concept including a 1800-seat indoor arena, several outdoor arenas, hundreds of stables and a range of support facilities like amenities, warm-up areas, training areas and camping areas.

“This would be a world-class state-of-the-art facility which could host equestrian competitions at the highest level and provide a centre of excellence for growing the sport. The facilities would also be able to be used for other purposes like community events and trade shows.

“Oakbank holds a special place in South Australia’s history and culture. It makes perfect sense to establish a world-class State Equestrian Centre on the site, creating jobs and generating other substantial economic benefits for the Adelaide Hills.

“That’s why I am in complete support of this proposal and will work to deliver government funding to make the State Equestrian Centre a reality.”
