Funding for Kangaroo Island intersection confirmed in Budget update

18 Dec 2018

Today’s Federal Budget update has confirmed the Australian Government’s $145,000 commitment to improve the North Coast Road and Emu Bay Road intersection on Kangaroo Island.

Liberal candidate for Mayo Georgina Downer said improving Kangaroo Island’s road network was essential to maximising the island’s economic return from tourism and agriculture, and improving road safety.

“This guarantee will give the Kangaroo island community certainty the project will go ahead,” Ms Downer said.

“Kangaroo Island is a unique region and community with enormous potential for sustainable growth in tourism, and we must always be working to improve its road network for both visitors and residents.”

Ms Downer said funding for intersection was being delivered as part of the Liberal Government’s record investment in land transport infrastructure across the country.

She said the record investment is creating thousands of jobs, driving increased productivity, supporting a growing population, and further strengthening the national economy.

“Our record investment in infrastructure includes $5.28 billion for South Australia since 2013 of which $1.8 billion was committed as new funding in the 2018-19 Budget in May this year,” Ms Downer said.

“This funding is making sure that local priorities like the North Coast Road and Emu Bay Road intersection are delivered, as well as major projects such as developing the North-South Corridor, electrifying the Gawler Rail Line, upgrading the Oaklands Crossing, building the Flinders Link Rail project, constructing the Port Wakefield Overpass and duplicating the Joy Baluch Bridge.

“These investments would not be possible without our strong economic management which is delivering and guaranteeing the essential services, like new transport infrastructure, which Australians rely on.”
