The Hut Community Shed at Aldgate has received $6720 for improvements and equipment in the latest round of the Australian Government’s National Shed Development Program.
Liberal candidate for Mayo Georgina Downer said men’s sheds were playing an increasingly important role in communities across the electorate and regional Australia.
“Men’s sheds provide numerous benefits for their members and the wider community,” Ms Downer said. “This is especially the case in regional areas. About 55% of men’s shed members live in regional areas like Mayo.
“They provide no-pressure friendly environments where men can make new social connections and, if they like, contribute to projects which assist their community.
“The Hut Community Shed goes a step further, opening twice a week to allow both men and women the opportunity to work on individual projects or make items for the Hut’s fundraising program. Experienced coordinators are on hand to provide general advice or specific help, such as guidance on using machinery and tools.
“This grant will support the installation of a concrete floor for a storage shed at the facility, and the purchase of additional tools and equipment.”
Senator for South Australia Anne Ruston said she was delighted for the Hut Community Shed, with the Coalition Government keen to support men’s sheds in their increasingly vital role.
“We recognise the important contribution that men’s sheds make, especially in country communities, which is why we’re providing $5.1 million over three years to June 2019 for the National Shed Development Program,” Senator Ruston said.
“Research into Australian men’s sheds show they provide many benefits such as reducing social isolation, improving physical health, enhancing self-esteem, improving men’s relationships with their spouses, families and friends, and raising awareness of men’s health issues.”
