The Lakeside Men’s Shed at Milang has received $5000 for facility improvements in the latest round of the Australian Government’s National Shed Development Program.
Liberal candidate for Mayo Georgina Downer said men’s sheds were playing an increasingly important role in communities across the electorate and regional Australia.
“Men’s sheds provide numerous benefits for their members and the wider community,” Ms Downer said. “This is especially the case in regional areas. About 55% of men’s shed members live in regional areas like Mayo.
“They provide no-pressure friendly environments where men can make new social connections and, if they like, contribute to projects which assist their community.
“This grant will support the Lakeside Men’s Shed to lay some concrete to fix an uneven floor in the metal workshop area. I’m always ready to assist organisations like men’s sheds to access Commonwealth funding which can help them.”
Senator for South Australia Anne Ruston said she was delighted for the Lakeside Men’s Shed, with the Coalition Government keen to support men’s sheds in their increasingly vital role.
“We recognise the important contribution that men’s sheds make, especially in country communities, which is why we’re providing $5.1 million over three years to June 2019 for the National Shed Development Program,” Senator Ruston said.
“Research into Australian men’s sheds show they provide many benefits such as reducing social isolation, improving physical health, enhancing self-esteem, improving men’s relationships with their spouses, families and friends, and raising awareness of men’s health issues.”
