The Australian and South Australian governments must meet urgently with the apple industry to develop a rapid response assisting Adelaide Hills growers following damaging storms in the region this week.
Liberal candidate for Mayo Georgina Downer said she had spoken with some growers who had suffered severe damage to their crops.
“I’ve spoken with several growers and Lenswood Apple Co-operative members,” Ms Downer said. “Some are reporting that their crops are almost entirely ruined due to storm damage.
“Now is the time for the Federal and State governments to immediately begin work with the apple industry to give growers the help they need, and support affected businesses to continue provide local jobs.
“We mustn’t forget the terrible impact of hailstorms suffered by Adelaide Hills growers in October last year.
“Just when growers could begin looking forward to a recovery, they’ve been hit again. Urgent action is now needed to ensure South Australia’s apple industry gets through this new crisis.”
